(The band formerly known as REO) Speedealer takes its reputation as a stoner rock staple very seriously. A collection of teeth-grinding one-offs recorded in a span of less than two days, Bleed couldn't fit its namesake in a more accurate fashion; the album is the perfect fix for fans that prefer their rock with an extra heaping of grit.
Rest assured that if Speedealer could've packaged this CD with fresh road kill, an unkempt beard and horrid body odor, they would've. The recording and mixing processes were kept to a ridiculously bare minimum, so the stereo space is tight, and the drums sometimes get buried under the thickness of the guitars – but it's a refreshing change from the often-overproduced, over-calculated rock albums of today. The two-minute title track opens the 12-song album with a relentless rage, blasting straight into "Rock and Roll," a super-driven barnburner somewhere between the crunchy riffage of Anthrax and the fried chicken and coffee-fueled yowling of Nashville Pussy. Groovier tracks like "On My Way" and "The Inventor of Evil," as well as the anger-propelled "When the Demon Is At Your Door" (which sounds like it was written with a little help from Dr. Jack Daniels) all provide a good sense of balance to the blazing tempo of the rest of the album.
Speedealer successfully accomplishes what Metallica wishes St. Anger could've been… and the wise of the world already know that untamed rock n' roll can't be harnessed (read: faked) with countless months of studio time and purposely cheap-sounding drum triggers. It's all in the heart, and Speedealer's latest is the perfect reminder of the power and ferocity that once made rock so feared… and respected. Clocking in at just slightly over 30 minutes, Bleed could very well become the Reign in Blood for stoners – quick, heavy and to the point.
