Grant helps music school expand instrument library

The North Valley Music School expanded its instrument lending library after receiving a grant.

A grant from the Kramer Family Foundation allowed the music school to expand its inventory by purchasing four Yamaha P45 keyboards.

With this instrument program, NVMS is able to help students who face an often overlooked barrier to music education – lack of an instrument.

Currently, the non-profit music school combines high quality education with students of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels. Scholarships are available to ensure that no student seeking a music education is turned down.

Jessica Shaw, director of opportunities at the school, says that “another important part of her musical journey is access to an instrument.”

Instruments are often expensive and without an instrument, a promising musician is powerless to develop his individual voice and / or take lessons. Access can start or stop its musical journey and possibly determine whether one can participate in a show, an orchestral audition or a chamber ensemble.

Sarah Mayal says the music school library was able to provide her with an instrument.

“When I knew I wanted to take music lessons, it was a big financial decision,” Mayal said. “I was thirsty for music and was passionate enough to run my budget to take the lessons, but it still didn’t seem possible because I couldn’t afford a violin.

The instrument loan program serves between 20 and 35 students per year. Instruments are available on a first come, first served basis and can be rented for $ 10 per month. Fellows are offered instruments free of charge. The current inventory includes 17 violins, nine keyboards, a drum set, two cellos and a few group instruments. This is possible thanks to private donors and grants.

The next investment target for NVMS is 16 new violins and financial support is needed. In addition, many other instruments age and need to be replaced.
