RI Philharmonic Music School announces dates for online ensemble auditions

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Music School is looking for young musicians to fill the rosters of its many youth ensembles for the 2021/2022 season. Student musicians from Rhode Island and surrounding Massachusetts and Connecticut are welcome to apply. Ensemble programs provide elementary, middle and high school students the opportunity to rehearse and perform a high-quality ensemble repertoire.

Bundle programs are offered in the following categories:
• Youth orchestras including beginner strings, intermediate strings, string orchestra, repertory orchestra and symphony orchestra.
• Wind ensembles, including wind ensemble and symphonic winds
• Jazz & Rock, including Big Band, Jazz Combos and Rock Combos.
• Chamber groups for string and wind instrumentalists

The auditions of the Youth Orchestras and Wind Ensembles for the 2021-2021 season will take place online via the Zoom platform. Interested students who cannot use Zoom can contact Christine Eldridge at celdridge@riphil.org or 401.248.7012 for other arrangements. Jazz, rock and chamber ensembles will be performed in person at the RI Philharmonic Music School, 667 Waterman Avenue, East Providence, RI 02914.

Ensemble descriptions and hearing requirements for each instrument are available at https://www.riphil.org/music-school/ensembles. The details of the ensemble, the dates and times of the auditions are as follows.

RI YOUTH PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRAS (RIPYO):
• Founded in 1956, the Rhode Island Youth Philharmonic Orchestras created our original Youth Ensemble program. This program has five levels, ranging from a beginner’s string ensemble for young orchestral musicians to an advanced symphony orchestra, which has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York.
• Looking for string players in grades 2 to 12 and wind, brass and percussionists in grades 9 to 12
• Dates of the RIPYO online auditions
• Monday August 23 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Wednesday August 25 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Thursday August 26 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• Tuesday August 31 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
• Wednesday September 8 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

RI PHILHARMONIC YOUTH WIND ENSEMBLES (RIPYWE):
• Founded in 2002, The Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensembles was created to provide advanced students in woodwind, brass and percussion in and around Rhode Island
Massachusetts and Connecticut an exceptional opportunity to rehearse and perform a high quality wind ensemble repertoire. RIPYWE offers these students a stimulating and enriching musical experience.
• Looking for grade 8 to 12 woodwind, brass and percussion players
• Dates of the RIPYWE online auditions
• Monday August 30 from 3:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.
• Wednesday September 8 from 3:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

RI PHILHARMONIC YOUTH JAZZ & ROCK sets:
• The Jazz & Rock Department offers a comprehensive training program for students interested in jazz or rock performance. Each student is placed in a set based on their skill level and interests. The sets are organized so that each student progresses from one level to the next. All jazz groups participate in two departmental recitals during the school year. New jazz and rock students audition for acceptance and placement.
• Search for musicians on all instruments from grades 6 to 12
• In-person auditions are by appointment

RI PHILHARMONIC YOUTH CHAMBER MUSIC Ensembles:
• Chamber music ensembles are small groups of 2 to 6 musicians, who perform without a conductor. Our chamber music program includes string quartets, piano trios, woodwinds
quintets and more. Each group usually performs in two recitals and a masterclass each year.
• Search for musicians on all instruments from grades 6 to 12
• Dates of the RIPYWE in-person auditions
• Tuesday September 14 from 3.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.
• Saturday September 18 from 8:30 am to 11 am
